One Night @ The Call Center Blog task

1.  Contemporary issues in on@tcc:

“Bhagat's tone is pitch-perfect, his observer's eye keenly focused on nuance and detail. Verisimilitude is all: The first two thirds of the novel evokes, indeed reproduces, the way the young call center workers think, talk, eat, drink, dress, date and behave.” Very clearly he portrays the world of real call center. Ambitious youngsters, restriction of society, Love, Marriage, Bossism etc. His novel explores the contemporary issues faced by young generation. Shyam is suffering from the lack of confidence. Vroom is not at all happy with his call center job, he thinks that the job that pay less would be better than call center job. Because he is capable of seeing the impact of American imperialism and globalization which other cannot visualize. Priyanka, major female character is facing the most famous problem for young girl ‘Marriage’. She is ready to marry with Ganesh only for her mother’s wish. Radhika wants to get rid of her mother-in-law and unfaithful husband. Old military uncle cannot adapt the change and therefore he remains aloof from his family. Isha, ambitious young girl suffered from failure.

2. Comment on Narrative structure of the novel. Compare with that of Life of Pi.

The book starts with the journey from Kanpur to Delhi. Writer meets one beautiful lady, who tells him the story of call center and asks to write book on it. Chetan Bhagat agreed with that and promised her to write a story. Novel sharply follows the Greek tradition of “ Three Unity”, Time, place and action. Writer allows Shyam to tell a story. Epilogue and Prologue of the novel is much appreciable. Which is one kind of Self-Help book. One can consider entire novel as Dream of writer. There is also possibilities to consider young lady as narrator.

“ Life of Pi” is great classic novel by Yann Martel. It follows the same narrative pattern as ‘One night @ the call center”. But the way Yann Martel captures Indian essence is excellent. Chetan Bhagat is lacking somewhere in that matter. Very beautifully he portrays Characters and their religious background. He gave the appropriate end to his novel with philosophy and logic. While Chetan Bhagat lacks in giving apt end. His God is like him who thinks in much strait way.

P             3. Popular Literature and ON@TCC

“one Night @ The Call Center” can be categorized as popular literature. Because it is written in most simple way by using  less difficult English that even Taxi driver can understand Chetan Bhagat’s novel. Mainly it deals with the theme of love and marriage. One cannot find deep development of characters with religious and cultural background. It doesn’t raise any serious question that needs high intellectual to understand.

But, if we illustrate the novel acutely than we come to the conclusion that it concerned with serious issues of society. Such as Effect of Globalization which is explored by the character of Vroom. Contemporary issues in the lives of young generation. Imperialism of America etc. In this way we can say that it is not Popular literature but can be put the in row of Classics.

               4.   Self-help book and on@tcc:

Nowadays ‘Self-help’ book is the trend of literary writing. Self-help book are written with the intention to instruct the readers on a numbers of personal problems. Self-help books often focus on popular psychology such as romantic relationship. Author provokes that his book has the answers of their questions. And it will help you to improve your present condition. ‘ One night @ the call center’ is a kind of Self-help book. In the prologue writer asks three questions to the readers,
       (I)    you fear,        (II)    makes you angry    (III)     you don’t like about yourself.

It will help readers to know and improve themselves.  God answers also can be consider as Self-help equipment.

5.How far can this novel be categorized as cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that features advanced science and technology in an urban, dystopian future.  We can find the features of Cyberpunk in the novel ‘One Night at the call center’. When Shyam and Vroom blackmail Subhash Bakshi with the help of Mail of Isha.  Another example is the  “Operation Yankee Fear” in which they planned to spread fear among American people through Ms word. Because they believe that call traffic goes up or American must call Indians everyday for daily affairs. Thus, they spread rumor that computers have virus.  So they will call them for solution because Indians are the masters of computers. In this way this novel can be categorized as cyberpunk.
