MARIO VARGAS LLOSA: “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS THE ENEMY OF FREEDOM”



 

Mario Vargas Llosa is a very deep thinker and philosopher. These men belong to a school of thought that believes in the individual as an autonomous and responsible being, and freedom as the supreme asset. This idea leads towards ‘Existentialism’. Human being have their individual choices and responsible for the consequences that may arrive at the end. Freedom is crucial aspect of life.

Time and again liberal thoughts and tinkers are attacked by society. Traditional structure of society will see liberal thinkers as threat to Existence. Liberal thinkers will not be afforded by orthodox society. Liberalism defends some basic ideas: freedom, individualism, the rejection of collectivism and nationalism – in other words, all the ideologies or doctrines that limit or annihilate freedom within society.

This is very pertinent question that Why do liberals reject nationalism?  Nationalism is the narrow definition for any country which confines it limited space. Idea of superiority may take place. When we speak the word nationalism at that time we put nation at the center and citizens at periphery. But we should not forget that nation is made up of people but people are not made up for nation.
Liberalism is essential aspect in any democratic Nation. There should be liberal ideas in democratic nation. Blindly, intellectuals have always seen democracy as a mediocre system that lacked the beauty, perfection and coherence of the big ideologies. And this blindness is not incompatible with great intelligence.   

TODAY THERE ARE INJUSTICES, SUCH AS DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN THAT DIDN’T EVEN FIGURE IN THE PAST. We can say that were discrimination against women in past too in our India. Women were suffering from inequality and resistance.


Literature is the artistic expression of life. Thus, there should be ‘freedom of expression’. It’s very false idea that literature should always be morally correct. Literature should be true to life. Whatever happens in the life that is reflected in literature. That may be good or bad but one should accept that.

Does political correctness threaten freedom? Political correctness is the enemy of freedom because it rejects honesty and authenticity. We have to tackle it as the distortion of the truth. It leads towards the term ‘Post –Truth’ the era in which we are living. One cannot imagine politics without lies.


 Recently, the term “fake news” has appeared in our midst as though it were something new. In this digital era one should be aware of fake news that is going on in and around. Cross checking is what necessary thing in this world.
